Description
1/2 x 3 Hot Dipped Galvanized (HDG) Hex Lag Screw is a corrosion-resistant fastener coated through a hot-dip galvanizing process, making it the preferred choice for exterior and high-moisture wood fastening applications.
Also known as an “HDG hex lag bolt” or “HDG lag bolt,” hex lag screws have a flat bearing surface, a hexagonal head, and a fully threaded or partially threaded shank with coarse, wood-gripping threads and a pointed tip. Their six-sided head allows for easy tightening with standard wrenches and sockets, and the thick galvanized coating provides long-lasting protection in outdoor and harsh environments.
Hot Dipped Galvanized (HDG)
- HDG hex lag screws offer superior corrosion resistance compared to standard zinc alternatives, thanks to a thick zinc coating applied through immersion in molten zinc
- Ideal for exterior construction, pressure-treated lumber, and applications exposed to moisture, humidity, or weather
1/2 x 3 HDG Hex Lag Screw Features
- High torque capacity due to the six-sided head, allowing use with wrenches, ratchets, and impact drivers
- Coarse, aggressive thread pattern designed to bite into wood fibers for a strong, secure hold
- Thick galvanized coating provides robust, long-lasting corrosion protection for outdoor and high-moisture environments
Common Uses
- Exterior wood construction including decking, fencing, pergolas, and timber framing
- Fastening pressure-treated lumber where standard zinc coatings may corrode prematurely
- Bridges, docks, agricultural structures, playground equipment, and outdoor landscaping
Application
- Always pre-drill a pilot hole to prevent wood splitting and ease installation
- Use a wrench, socket, or impact driver sized to the hex head
- Do not require a nut — threads bite directly into the wood substrate for holding power
Tips
- Always use a washer under the head to distribute load and prevent the head from digging into the wood surface
- Hex lag screws are measured from directly under the head to the tip of the shank
- The HDG coating adds thickness to the fastener — ensure pre-drilled pilot holes are sized to accommodate the coating
